Everybody gets a bit nervous the night before a job interview. It’s an unfamiliar situation and a lot of pressure. It’s completely natural to feel some butterflies in your stomach, or a bit of anxiety.

However, there are a number of things you can do to ensure that you’re as prepared as possible for your big day. And when you feel prepared, you’ll also feel more confident and less anxious. Which will undoubtedly help you perform better in the interview.

Do your research.

No one expects you to be a complete expert on the company when you arrive for a job interview. But doing some research and learning as much as you can about the company that you’re applying to will make you stand out from the crowd. Visit the company’s website. Read any news articles written about the organization. Look on message boards or job sites. You never know what might come up in the interview. The employer will be impressed that you took the time to learn more about the company.

Practice your responses.

Like we just discussed, you never know what type of questions may come up in a job interview. Every interviewer is different. That said, there are some things you can assume will come up in your conversation. Previous employment history and employee strengths and weakness are very common interview topics. Assume that your interviewer will ask you about these things, and practice how you might respond. You don’t want your responses to seem robotic or insincere. But you do want to avoid rambling or freezing up on the spot. Ask a friend or family member to do a mock interview with you if it helps.

Make your morning routine foolproof.

The night before an interview is an ideal time to do whatever you can to streamline your morning routine. Not a morning person? Consider showering before bed. Lay out your clothes the night before. Print off copies of your resume and tuck them in your bag. Arrange your jacket, keys, and personal belongings by the front door for easy access. Do everything you can to avoid rushing around in the morning. You want to feel as calm as possible on your way to the interview.

Get some rest.

Sleep is our brain’s way of hitting the reset button. If you’re overtired, you can have trouble with everything from memory to hand-eye coordination. Even if you don’t follow any of the other steps the night before, make sure you follow this one. Get to bed early and try to get a solid eight hours of rest.
