Is there really a right time to ask for a raise? Yes.

When it comes to asking your employer for more money, the right time to do it is after both you and your boss have agreed to it.

This is the point when your boss is enjoying a breath of relief at having gone through a possibly awkward raise conversation. This is the perfect time to ask your employer if you can have a moment of their time for a brief, face-to-face meeting.

The Meeting

During your one-on-one meeting with your boss, you’ll want to talk to them about your next performance review. Consider saying something along these lines:

When you’re evaluating my performance with your boss, think of yourself asking – How much can we afford to offer this employee as a raise. I’d hate to lose them to our competitors. 

Now, what can I do – and please be as specific as you possibly can – that would make you want to go to bat for me like that?

Listen carefully to your employer’s reply and make notes, to make sure you understand your expectations. Then ask your boss if you can read it back to them, again, reinforcing that you know what is expected of you.

When you get the ‘Yes’ of confirmation from your boss, you’re in the home stretch.

Follow Up

Ask your employer if they would be okay with your scheduling weekly or monthly meeting (depending on the expectations) to check in and make sure you’re on the right path. You could try saying something like this:

I’d like to touch base with you every week or two to make sure I’m exceeding your expectations. What would work best for you?

When you have a plan of action, it’s easier to get the results you’re hoping to achieve. And this plan is an ideal way to combat any unpleasant emotions you may be experiencing following your initial raise conversation.
