Your resume is the first step in getting that great new job you’re looking for. If you haven’t updated it for a while, or if you’re just starting out in the job market, here are a few basic resume tips that can lead to success in your job search.

Make a Good First Impression

Your resume is your letter of introduction to prospective employers. This is when they first get to meet you and a poorly written resume may close the door before it really opens. The average hiring manager spends 6 second reviewing your resume, and if it has errors or is incomplete, it will end up in their trash basket just as quickly.

Talk about Your Experience

Many job applicants talk about their qualifications, but few talk about their actual experience. If you want to make your application stand out, then talk about your work, volunteer, and life experiences. If you’ve been in the Canadian Armed Forces, then talk about the training you’ve had, the postings you’ve been assigned to, and the real life experiences you’ve had. Even if you are just coming out of school, you can talk about your summer employment and your volunteer experience. Tell them about your potential and the experiences you will bring to add value to the organization.

Keep It Simple but Correct

Don’t try and do too much with your resume. Many experts believe that a one-page resume is all you need. If you have diplomas or degrees, mention them, but you don’t need to list all of your courses. Spellcheck your resume one more time before you click on the button. Better yet, have a friend read it to help spot mistakes that could cost you later.
