Everybody who cares about creating a successful career has the same question: “What do I need to do to stand out?” It’s an excellent question and one you should be asking. Getting ahead does not happen by blending into the crowd or following them where they lead you. It’s about setting yourself apart and charting your own course.

Doing your job well is a good start, but your employer is going to be looking for leadership traits when it comes time to move someone up the ladder. And leaders typically need to care about their job and take care of the needs of the company as a whole.

Here are five things that are important for you to do if you want to stand out at work and have the best chance for the next promotion:

  1. Go beyond the requirements of your job

No one should blame you if you leave work at 5:00 pm, but if you want to stand out, stick around until you’ve finished the task you’re working on. You’ll be helping the customers, the company, and yourself. Also, lend a hand to your co-workers when they are struggling. You’ll get two thumbs up for being cooperative and for going beyond the call of duty.

  1. Be proactive

The workplace is filled with reactive workers. You probably know a few. They wait until something breaks down and then run to the boss for a solution. Anticipate problems and come up with ways to fix them. Then, run it by your supervisor. You will have averted a problem and given your boss one less thing to worry about.

  1. Take the lead whenever you can

Someone has to take the lead, why not you? Give your opinions, suggestions, and ideas respectfully, and you’ll make a positive impression. Challenge procedures that don’t make sense. Standing by silently puts you back into the crowd and ensures that you will be overlooked.

  1. Speak up during meetings

Once again, show your leadership skills by speaking up during meetings. It shows that you’re willing to contribute to the well-being of the company. If management is at the meeting, you will get favorable notice, as long as your comments are pertinent and clearly articulated.

  1. Don’t wait to be asked to do something

If something needs to be done and everyone else is ignoring it, step up and do it. Many of your co-workers carry the “it’s-not-my-job” attitude. Turn yourself into the person that can be counted upon to do things without being asked. It’s the perfect way to stand out from those who stand around and wait to be told.
