So, you had a great interview. You showed up on time, you came prepared, and you think you really made an excellent impression on your interviewer. Now your work is over. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and wait to hear those four magic words: You got the job. Right?

Wrong.

It’s absolutely essential to follow up your interview with a thank you note. Thanking your interviewer for his or her time shows that you’re respectful, considerate, and, most importantly, very serious about the job. It’s also one final chance for you to make a case for why you are the best candidate for the position. In fact, some experts say that a well-written thank-you note is one of the most important parts of a successful interview process.

But what makes a good thank you note? To start, a thank you note should be well written and well timed. That means sending your note no later than 24 hours after your interview and making sure to proofread your work several times to ensure there are no spelling or grammatical errors.

While some employees choose to send a handwritten thank-you note, emailing your thank you is a perfectly acceptable practice. You may also want to consider sending an individual note to each person that you interacted with during your job interview. Even though this will take a little bit of extra time, your eagerness and consideration will earn you some extra points when it comes time for the company to make a hiring decision.
