There’s an old saying that you should dress for the job that you want, not the job that you have. But how do those rules apply in a job interview? If you’re interviewing for a job in a business environment, it’s a no-brainer that you would show up for the interview wearing classic business attire. So, applying that same logic, wouldn’t that mean that a person interviewing for a warehouse job should wear their work boots and jeans to their interview?

Not exactly. Just because most warehouse workers dress casually, it’s not necessarily a good idea to show up in your jeans to your interview. And here’s why.

Dressing in a professional manner shows that you’re really trying to make a good impression. It indicates that you’re taking your interview seriously. That you want to stand out from the crowd.  However, many job seekers are concerned that if they dress to impress they’ll go overboard and look silly or out of place.

Here are a few general rules of thumb when preparing an outfit for your warehouse job interview. For men, you can’t go wrong with the classic combination of a dress shirt and a nice pair of trousers. Make sure your hair is neat and tidy and your shoes are clean.

For women, dress pants and a dress shirt are perfectly appropriate. A professional skirt is also suitable, though pants will likely be the preferred choice for anyone interviewing for a position in a warehouse environment. Hair should be well-groomed and makeup should be clean and professional. Closed-toe flat shoes or shoes with a smaller heel are also a smart choice.

As an added bonus, looking sharper than usual will likely make you feel poised and confident for your interview. And you can never go wrong with that.
