There’s a good chance that social media will play a part in helping you land your next job. According to a recent recruiting survey, 37 percent of recruiters found new hires through social media in 2016, and that percentage is bound to go higher. The bottom line: If you don’t have a social media presence, you’re probably missing out on opportunities.

So, now that you realize social media can be a potent job search tool, you need to figure out which one offers the most advantages in your particular search. While each of the platforms has merit, you need to determine which one can help you the most in your situation. It can be a confusing landscape, so here are some ideas to help you make sense of it.

Be on Facebook

Facebook is a good option if you want to add a second platform. Just be aware that it can be very time-consuming. You must put a lot into it to get the benefits out of it. It’s not a passive social media option! Try going directly to Facebook Jobs to apply online with the information you’ve already provided to Facebook, like work history and school.

How about Pinterest or Instagram?

Pinterest is a good choice if you’re looking at a career in design or fashion, such as architecture or home décor. Instagram makes sense if you work in a field that targets millennials. A good rule of thumb is to pick the platform that makes the most sense for your future career.

How often should you visit social media?

With social media, you should be using it regularly rather than sporadically. You’ll leave a more lasting impression if you check your Twitter feeds often and re-tweet interesting posts. You should also be posting relevant content consistently if you’re using LinkedIn or Instagram. Because maintaining your presence can eat up so much of your time, it might be wise to limit your focus to two platforms.

Be careful what you post

You might post something funny or embarrassing to your audience, but you can’t be certain that it won’t spread beyond its intended audience and offend others. Stay away from posts that can be divisive. (Many of your neighbors to the south learned this lesson the hard way during their contentious 2016 presidential election).
