2020 is approaching its conclusion, and now represents an ideal time to evaluate your career goals. If you assess your career goals at the end of the year, you can find out if you are on the right track toward making your aspirations come true. You can also determine if your current career goals are still relevant and develop new ones for 2021 as needed.

As you evaluate your career goals, there are several things you should do to get the most value out of your assessment, such as:

1. Review Your Professional Accomplishments

Make a list of your 2020 professional achievements. Next, you can analyze your professional accomplishments in combination with your career goals for the year to determine if there is alignment between the two.

If you find your professional accomplishments fall in line with your career goals, you can take solace in the fact that you are on the right path toward a rewarding career. On the other hand, if your professional achievements fall outside your career goals, you may want to reconsider your career path. At this point, you can always consider new career opportunities in 2021. You can also make a plan that includes actionable steps to accomplish a wide range of career milestones in the year to come.

2. Examine Your Techniques

Along with evaluating your professional accomplishments, craft a list of techniques you used to help you accelerate your career growth in 2020. For instance, if you revised your resume several times or interviewed for dozens of jobs during the year, you can include these details in your list. You can then evaluate the techniques you used to further your career growth, figure out what worked well, and plan accordingly for 2021.

If you discover certain techniques work better than others, you should incorporate them into your career planning efforts for the new year. Conversely, if various techniques were ineffective in 2020, you may want to avoid them going forward. As you implement new techniques or forgo others in 2021, you should continuously examine their effectiveness, too.

3. Tweak Your Timeline

Assess your career timeline thus far. This allows you to see what you have accomplished and the techniques you have used to accomplish your career goals to date, as well as how long it has taken you to reach the current point in your career.

If you find you are behind where you want to be in your career, there is no need to stress. Remember, 2021 marks a new year to reinvent yourself and revamp your career aspirations. Take advantage of this opportunity to adjust your career timeline, and you’ll be well-equipped to make 2021 a “career” year.
