According to the World Health Organization, burnout is defined as a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.” Signs include feelings of exhaustion, increased mental distance from the job, feelings of negativity related to work, and decreased effectiveness.  

You’ll want to avoid burnout before it sets in, if possible. But how do you do that? 

Remember Your Purpose

Think back to when you first started your career. Why did you choose it? What excites you about it? How does your job fit into that purpose? Rediscovering your purpose for work is a big step toward reinvigorating your drive and helping you to keep burnout at bay. And you might find that your purpose doesn’t quite align with your work the way it once did – that’s okay. It just means it’s time to take the next step in your career, whether that’s taking on different responsibilities or exploring another field. 

Give To Others

Help your coworkers without being asked; lend a helping hand so others can finish their shifts on time; stay an extra 10 minutes after quitting time to ask a rookie how their day went. Taking a little time to give to others is a great way to add meaning to your work. Even small acts of kindness go a long way toward making you feel good about yourself and your contribution to the workplace – and that helps to keep burnout at bay. 

Manage Your Stress

Almost any job has stressful moments. The trick is not to always try and avoid all stress. It’s to manage stress successfully.  

How do you do that, exactly? Stress management can take different forms for different people. You might practice deep breathing or meditation, or mindfulness techniques. You might journal at the end of the day to get your thoughts out on paper. Or, you might speak to a professional to learn about other techniques for managing stress at work and in your personal life. 

Stay Healthy

Getting regular exercise is another important way to avoid burnout, and it also doubles as a great stress-management tool for many people. It doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym every day after work; just getting in a light jog or a brisk walk can help you feel better about your work. And remember to eat well and get enough sleep, too – being physically healthy is very important for keeping burnout at bay.
