We all know how important it is to get enough sleep. Chances are this is something you’ve heard all your life. When you sleep well, you’re more productive, mentally sharp, emotionally balanced, and energized. And particularly if you work in the light industrial industry, arriving to work fully rested in critical.

However, did you know that your sleep quality matters almost as much as your sleep quantity? That’s means it’s not just how much sleep you get, but, whether or not you’re getting the right kind of sleep, i.e., the most restful sleep.

So how do you improve your sleep quality?

One way is to get in sync with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, otherwise known as your circadian rhythm. You can do this by establishing a regular sleep cycle by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. After practicing a routine for a period of time, eventually your body’s internal clock will adjust to your schedule and your sleep quality will naturally improve. It may mean foregoing naps and sleeping in on Sunday morning, but chances are, you will feel much more rested in the long run.

Another strategy involves limiting your screen time before bed. The blue light emitted by digital screens can be highly disruptive to your sleep cycle. You may want to consider avoiding your computer, phone, and TV for at least 1-2 hours before going to sleep.

Here are a few additional tips to improve the quality of your sleep:

  • Time your exercise accordingly. Aerobic exercise, in particular, speeds up your metabolism and activates your body’s hormones. This can make it difficult to fall asleep, so try to finish your workout at least three hours before you plan to go to sleep.
  • Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages in the evenings.
  • Stay away from big meals before bed. Large meals put a strain on your digestive system and may keep you awake. Try to keep any nighttime meals small and light.
